Try doing this from a non-root terminal:
ls -a -R ~/.sane
In my system:
--- /home/conrad/.sane: . .. xsane /home/conrad/.sane/xsane: . .. batch-lists hp:psc__1200__series.drc xsane.mdf xsane.rc /home/conrad/.sane/xsane/batch-lists: . .. --- Also, do the complete uninstall and then reinstall of sane and see what happens.
