Did you try deleting ~/.sane ?
BTW, it is safe to remove ubuntu-desktop for your purposes (e.g.
temporarily) as its just a meta-package. Once you're done removing Xsane,
just mark ubuntu-desktop for reinstallation and it should reinstall any
packages that were removed. The only real danger to removing ubuntu-desktop
is if you forget that you did it and then try to dist-upgrade by a method
other than the Ubuntu Update Manager (then you might get a broken Edgy
system ;)
