Oh, yes. And re-installed, and looked at the consequences of a
*complete* removal of XSane (which, at least with Ubuntu, entails
removal of Ubuntu-desktop as well; I didn't go that far). As I said: no
sign of recovered vunctionality whatsoever. On starting a pre-scan,
post-failure and post-re-install, there is about one second of activity
by the scanner but then it halts and the i/o error message reappears
after about a 10-second timeout.
