is there an option in the bios to emulate IDE devices for USB storage
devices? You could also try to put the drive in the machine if the 750
has an internal IDE connection.

BTW. Why Gentoo? I used to use Gentoo and liked it for the most part.
But I do blame it for the early (Luckily, on Warranty) demise of 2
laptop motherboards due the the heat generated by all night (and some of
the next day) compile sessions.
