You were having some issues with it the other night too before you
tried suspend2; could it be a hardware issue? (maybe boot a Dapper
Live CD and see if it works without incident?)
To revert, did you just go into Synaptic and mark the packages for
reinstallation or did you manually go back and undo the changes? (if
the latter, maybe try the former?)

Certainly this will fix your problem if its not hardware ;) Be sure
to backup /home first.
