Hmm... seems you're not the only person to have this problem; as per

"Have a look in /etc/iftab In there you will find a list of ethX and
associated MAC addresses. You take the MAC address of your new card...
and put eth0 in front of that."

and in reply to that:

"Cool! It works. I deleted iftab. iftab contained my old card eth0
with its mac address. Then made the necessary changes to my
/etc/network/interfaces Now everything is back to normal"

try that and see how it goes :)
