I use dnscache. It's pretty good. The problem I find is that some
people set their DNS TTL too low, meaning my system has to go back and
refresh the record every 5 minutes if I look (instead of a few hours or
days).
Another good thing is to run squid and privoxy chained; that way, you
get all the benefits of no ads (= less to download!), and a decent cache
that's shared between all your browsers (instead of having a half-dozen
browsers, each with their own 500mb cache folder).
Squid on a beefy machine is always faster than a local browser :)
