Thanks for your help. I think I have the problem solved, but I don't know
exactly what caused it. I tried booting Ubuntu on the box in question,
and the program _didn't_ fail. So, it has to be some interaction between
software and the processor. (The box in question was a stock Sarge with
all the latest updates -- exactly what I have at home where it worked.)
So, finally I added testing to my sources.list, upgraded a bunch of
packages (perl, freetype, too many to remember -- they all depended on
each other) and it quit bombing. But... now it chopped the text at the
first space. Finally, I compiled the latest Imager from CPAN, with GCC4
(still failed when compiled with GCC3.3), and it now works. I would love
to know which part was causing the problem, but now I have to move on and
do the stuff I was trying to do yesterday.
