The biggest memory waster for X systems is typically image/page caching
in browsers. Browsers keep caches of recently visited images and pages
and keep handles in the X server to the generated images. Typically
shutting down whatever browser is active has a correspondingly large
impact on the memory usage in the X server too.

This incidentally also can introduce significant memory fragmentation
within the browser, making some of the allocated memory unfreeable in
current implementations.
