Crappy memory usage in Ubuntu.

Ok, I'm no slouch; I have 2gb of RAM in my desktop. The problem is
that the Xorg shipped with Ubuntu 5.10 (6.8.2) appears to have a memory
leak. 5 days of uptime, and my top shows this:
8650 root 16 0 13k 665m 351m 8356 ..8.21.. R 1.0 17.3 178:04 Xorg

665mb! woah. Under 10.2 Slackware, the Xorg 6.9 was a bit more
svelte.. running for a week with 2gb of RAM and VMWare open, nothing had
touched swap.

When it did get heavy, closing/repopening FireFox/Mozilla (who will leak
a few hundred mb every week or so) would clear it up nicely. However,
even though I closed VMWare and the Gecko memory leakers, then "sudo
swapoff -a && swapon -a" to force it to page back in, the kernel went
ahead and evicted all these Xorg pages again within a few hours.

I'm sure Conrad will tell me that Dapper will fix this :) Is Dapper 6.9
or 7.0 Xorg?
