MAC addresses are not hard to fake. WPA *is* more secure. Running a VPN
is *much* more secure.
Funny story: there are lots of wireless card users who don't realize
they need to have an internet connection - they think that buying the
card means they "have the internet", and get confused when their
neighbors move away and they can't get online anymore.
