Dead mouse.

Now why Mandrake claimed to autodetect the new mouse and didn't, I don't
know; then it did actually detect the mouse when he reinstalled.

Man the guess about the drake part was right :-) Wouldn't it make more
sense to make all the commands be drake<something>? Then when I'm
looking for a drake program I can use tab completion to list them all...
