Can linux solve this windows problem?

As its been mentioned, Microsoft in a service pack explicitly changed
the non-server version of Windows 2k and XP to only allow a few
connections (5 or 10?) to ensure you upgrade to the server version.

Personally I'd upgrade all the clients to pro with a linux server.
 Unfortuately I can't remember the list anymore but I ran into many
undocumented differences between home and pro that were show stoppers.
 But then basic desktop users without a BOFH trying to control them may
not notice the differences.
