Firebird is the experimental, possibly eventual replacement for Mozilla.
Mozilla 1.4 is still the top link on the Mozilla site. Mozilla 1.5 is in
beta. For the average end-user, Mozilla 1.4 is the right choice.
If I were an average end-user, I wouldn't play with Firebird or
Thunderbird until they are far more stable. (i.e. closer to 1.0)

Nope. Firebird is a new, significantly changed, offshoot of Mozilla.
Netscape is based on Mozilla, not Firebird. I'm not sure how many
improvements in Firebird find their way back into Mozilla. Netscape is
only an improvement on Mozilla if you consider AOL ads an improvement.
